Workshop NEXUS (Nature x Value Webs x Territories), Biodiversity-based value webs and territorial bioeconomy systems in Colombia: practice and research

This Workshop aims to set a structure and research agenda for establishing a research network that connects researchers in Germany and Colombia around three focal points: i) sustainable use of plant biodiversity, production systems, biobased products and natural ingredients and non-timber forest products; ii) Biodiversity conservation, values and livelihoods; iii) Biodiversity and resilient agriculture. An initiative of the University of Hohenheim and the Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute – Colombia with the support from the Colombian Embassy in Berlin.

Amazonia – 3 moments of cinematography: “Amazonas – The Largest River in the World” (film exhibition)

A rediscovered silent documentary from the early 20th century providing an invaluable historical perspective on the Amazon River. This film will be accompanied by a live organ played by Anna Vavilkina. “Der Sturz des Himmels”, by Davi Kopenawa Yanomami and Bruce Albert

Official launch of the German translation of the book “The Falling Sky: Words of a Yanomami Shaman”. In partnership with the publisher Matthes & Seitz Berlin. Yanomami shaman and political leader Davi Kopenawa is a central voice in the defense of the Amazon and the rights of indigenous peoples.

“Der Sturz des Himmels”, originally published in French in 2010, is a work that transcends genres, combining autobiography, social criticism and philosophical reflection. Written based on conversations between Kopenawa and anthropologist Bruce Albert, the book is a testament to the Yanomami struggle to preserve their culture and the Amazon rainforest. It is, at the same time, an urgent call to action and a profound reflection on the interconnection between nature and human beings.

Special Guest: Karin Uttendörfer, the German translator of the book, will be present to share her experience in the translation process.

Panel „Bioökonomie und integriertes Biodiversitätsmanagement“

The Embassy of Colombia to Germany together with the Botanic Garden Berlin and the Amazonian Institute of Scientific Research (SINCHI Institute) will host the Panel: „Bioökonomie und integriertes Biodiversitätsmanagement“. The Amazon region is not only crucial for global climate regulation but is also one of the world’s most biologically and culturally diverse areas. Traditional economic practices and the knowledge of indigenous communities are essential for environmentally and socially just development. This event will explore how a broad-based bioeconomy, incorporating innovations and technology transfers, can strengthen independent production chains and offer a path toward sustainable development. Drawing on recent diversity research in the Colombian Amazon, we will discuss potential research strategies with German partners to conserve and sustainably utilize the region’s biodiversity. The event aims to contribute to the upcoming COP16 in Colombia. The event will conclude with a cultural showcase by “Canoafolk” who will present the performance “The Atrato River, a River with Rights”.

Damixarabú- The era of transformation (Vernissage with opening ceremony and exhibition)

The sisters Yaká and Rita Huni Kuin represent the Indigenous Huni Kuin people from the state of Acre in the Brazilian Amazon. Their art is not only a tool for creative self-expression and representation of their culture but also the language they use to communicate with the world. Ancient stories and songs become vivid colorful paintings with details. Pictorial elements mix with traditional geometric patterns, inspired by traditional medicines. Thanks to their art, Rita and Yaká have been travelling throughout the world, making them important representatives of a growing movement of young female activists from the Amazon who act as bridges between their communities with their traditional way of life, and “the world out there. After numerous solo exhibitions worldwide and several joint exhibitions, including at the Museu de Arte Moderna in São Paulo, this is the first time that the two will exhibit together in Europe. We invite you to the vernissage with a small ceremony and concert.

Through the Amazon: State social action in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest
